“It is more difficult to care about a man’s Soul than to care about the man. It is very easy to care about a man but it is very difficult to care about the Part you cannot see — only the Part God wants to return to Him. That Part is the Part no man really knows and that is the Part that is Most Important to God.
When we all die on the earth we will return to dust and no man will remember us. But the Part of us that God wants to return to Him is the Part called the ‘Soul’: the Spirit of Light, the Spirit of Love, the Spirit of Hope, the Spirit of reality, the Spirit of Beauty, the Spirit of doing and serving, and the Spirit that belongs to Him; the Spirit of many things and many desires of Him, for you see, the Soul is a Part of God, the Part He gave to each man to bring you close to Him, the Part of every man in this room that he does not see but he knows is there and he does not feel, but he hopes It is there; the Part that makes life worth living, the Part that makes serving a beautiful thing, and the Part that giving makes beautiful, because you see, giving cannot always be seen, serving cannot always be appreciated, loving cannot always be appreciated, and yes, the Soul cannot always be what men think It should be, a human part.
If the Soul were to be a human part of every man’s body, men would not have something to look for, to look to. Does this make sense to you? So, as you have been blessed with a Soul, I, Saint Alphonsus Liguori, say to you, ‘You have always been blessed with the beauty of Faith.’ Remember this: Faith will not brighten your Soul, not Faith alone, but the acts you perform, the love you give, the deeds you do, the service you render, the hope you extend, the love you share, will brighten the Soul to one day come Here. So be it.”
